Hers and His : Fall

October 1st, 2013

his & hers
I love summer, but at a certain point, I’m just over it and ready for Fall already. I want big comfy sweaters and boots and more than anything I just want to burn the oppressive bikinis I have been a slave to for the last few months. It comes on slow and late in the South, but once it does, the smell of fires in fireplaces at night, fallen leaves and earlier sunsets are just about the greatest things. Here’s a few of the best things about Fall for both her and him.

Hers: J. Crew Everly Calf Hair Pump

My Grandmother Vivian lived in a self imposed world of zebra print. Throughout her whole house. She even had an entire bathroom devoted to zebra motif with zebra wallpaper, linens, soap dispensers. It was madness. Pure madness I tell you! Seeing how some things are just past down from generation to generation, I too have developed an obsession for animal print. Mine is leopard. I have been searching for the perfect leopard coat high and low (Top Shop made the perfect one last season). All I want is a pair of leopard print jeans. I have caught myself lingering dangerously long in front of the leopard print Lee press on nails at the drugstore which is when my red flags went up. In effort to keep myself from plunging into that endless abyss my Grandma fell prey to all those years ago, I have limited myself to one leopard print purchase this fall and these calf hair leopard heels were what I settled on. I love them so.

His: Tricker’s Commando Sole Ilkey Brogues

Don’t let them fool you, these Tricker’s are about as tough, weather-wise, as any boot. A heavy brogue derby with a bellow tongue, storm welt, Black Scotch Grain leather uppers and go-anywhere-in-any-weather commando sole.

Hers: Emerson Fry Wool Tweed Gusset Coat

I have a massive girl crush on Emerson Fry. She is gorgeous, her designs are beautiful and I want this coat!

His: Freemans Sporting Club Isle of Man Waxed Parka

This is the type of jacket that goes, head first, from Fall into Winter. Extremely rugged, FSC is the house label that launched one of the best mens stores in the country. Plenty of pockets, hooded, waxed canvas…the perfect storm of jackets.

Hers: Vintage Emerald Earrings

I have known Amy Martin of Nashville’s AJ Martin, since before I was born. Her shop, hands down, has the most wonderful selection of estate jewelry in Nashville and I love to pop in from time to time to try on beautiful art deco diamond necklaces, rings and broaches. My latest obsession are these pearl and emerald earrings set in gold. And let’s be honest, I have a much better chance of owning these little gems than the diamond necklace. Sigh.

His: Camo Ranger Hat

He looks good in this Ranger hat by Camo but I may have to “borrow” it.

Hers: Clare Vivier Messenger Tote

I love Clare Vivier’s leather goods, this bag in particular. In Steven Alan in NYC the other day, I saw it in cherry red and it was love at first sight.

His: Filson Large Twill Carry On

As rugged as it gets, Filson luggage is made to take whatever your travels throw at it. And I have a tendency to over pack and over shop when I travel- so he needs some sturdy luggage to compensate for my excess.

Hers: Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

During fall and winter, I love a bright red lip and pale eye. The Nars dragon girl is the perfect shade of red.

His: George F. Trumper Sandalwood deodorant

George F. Trumper. Established in 1875 and making gentlemen smell good ever since.

Hers: Homemade Chili

I did a post on this 2 weeks ago and have since made chili 4 times. I might have a problem.

His: Mac n’ Cheese

Once the temperature drops and the leaves begin to fall, it’s comfort food time. Mac n’ Cheese is my go to. Whenever I visit New York, I make the trip across the East River to DuMont in Brooklyn just for this. And when at home in Nashville, I love to make Ina Garten’s recipe. It’s delicious.

Hers: Burn the Witch, Rolf & Daughters

Well, the secret is out. Bon Apetit recently named Nashville’s Rolf and Daughters their #3 new restaurant in America which I am thrilled about and is certainly deserved. But I am ready for all the hype to die down because I cannot get a seat at the bar to save my life anymore. And the perfect fall cocktail is their burn the witch; Lairds Apple Brandy, Cynar, Amontillado Sherry, Carpano Antica, Laphroaig and Hickory Smoked Sea Salt. Yum.

His: Magners Cider

There’s nothing more Fall-like than a Magners over ice at a nice warm pub somewhere with some good friends.

Hers: Vintage Moroccan Wedding Blanket

Moroccan wedding blankets are woven by the bride’s female relatives in anticipation of the bride-to-be’s wedding. A laborious task attaching the hundreds of small mirrored sequins, it can take many, many hours usually amounting to weeks. During this time the elder women teach the bride about the birds and the bees and prepare her for her for the duties and expectations that come with being a new wife. After the wedding ceremony, the bride wears the blanket tied around her neck as a kind of cape as she travels to her new marital home. In our modern society where families are so spread out and disjointed, this is a tradition I find so beautiful and endearing. And I want one of these for my bed!

His: FSC Barber Candle

FSC Barber Candle. Smells perfectly masculine. Just like the barber shop. Without having to listen to a bunch of sports talk.

Hers: Shovels and Rope, O’ Be Joyful

I had never heard of this band until I saw them perform live at the Americana Music awards a few weeks ago. A Husband and wife duo out of Charleston, SC , Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst are the real deal. I have been listening to their album O’ Be Joyful nonstop since first hearing them.

His: Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Master and Everyone

There’s just something so Autumnal about this record to me. Beautiful, spare, quiet, creaky and sentimental. Whatever the reason, it’s played often come this time of year.

Hers: Zero George Street Hotel, Charleston SC

While my dream getaway would be the Scottish countryside, alas, with two (lovely) children and a busy work schedule, that is simply not an option. Charleston, however, is a short plane ride and one of my favorite cities in the US. I have yet to visit the Zero George but oh my word does this place look amazing!

His: This.

In this. Wherever this is. Wherever it is going.

Hers: Bridget Jones Mad About the Boy by Helen Fielding

I should probably name a book that would make me seem über intelligent and very well read. And while I am actually an avid reader and a bit of a literary snob, I CAN NOT WAIT for the new Bridget Jones book to come out! My sisters and I all read the first two books numerous times and the movies we could certainly recite from beginning to end. This month’s Vogue has an excerpt from the third book and while I can’t say it wowed me (SPOILER ALERT: I hear rumor that Mr. Darcy is dead- is there no God????) my sisters and I have already pre-ordered our copies and are gearing up for our very own Bridget Jone’s book club.

His: Enon by Paul Harding

The follow up novel to the heart-breakingly poetic “Tinkers“, Harding’s prose are as heart rendingly beautiful as they are Cormac McCarthy-vivid. I picked up “Tinkers” in an airport bookstore and didn’t put it down until touch down, luckily on the very last page. Although early reviews have been very mixed, I just can’t wait to read this one. No matter what anyone has to say about it.
